Supernova 1987A

An impressive image (from Hubble) of the shock wave and trace ring from Supernova 1987a. What you see here is a ring of gas (probably released 20,000 years before the star went nova), as well as a hot ring of material that is left over from the explosion that resulted from the star's death.
